Just a short hop from the bright lights of Miami, the beaches of Fort Lauderdale and the iconic Hollywood murals, the Everglades are a breathtaking place to visit in South Florida. That being said, just some of the best things to do in Everglades National Park can be difficult to find when you are on a getaway.

It’s fun every time we’ve visited South Florida we’ve made an effort to visit the Everglades. It is one of those places that is so unique and without sounding like an ecology fan, its landscape and ecosystem are so unique to visit.

From alligators, incredible bird life and huge swaths of pristine streams to explore; You can spend weeks in Everglades National Park and still not see it all.

Because of this, I wanted to share some of our top spots that we loved to visit in Florida.

1.) Sawgrass Recreation Park

At the northern points of the Everglades, Sawgrass Recreation Park is right in the Everglades and in the Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Area.

Plus, it’s one of the easiest places to visit in Fort Lauderdale (about 25 minutes from downtown). Yes, it might be near town, but it actually feels like a million miles away – you’re in total wilderness when you’re here.

When you arrive, make your way to the Sawgrass Airboat Tour which is so much fun! We loved it especially when we got to see a bunch of alligators! Not only that, the team is so knowledgeable and passionate about the Everglades – they really got our experience!

Got peckish? Also, try some of the freshly fried Gator tail bites! They were delicious.

2.) Shark Valley

Located about 50 minutes from Miami, Shark Valley is one of the best spots in the Everglades. Miami is easy to get to.

Once you are here, head to the hiking trails and the legendary Bobcat Boardwalk, which is absolutely breathtaking on a beautiful sunny day. However, take plenty of water and sunscreen with you – moisture and mosquitoes can be harsh.

If you fancy chilling out, take the tram tour where you want discover a bunch of locals like; the turtles, regional birds that are great to explore. Of course there is also a shed load of alligators!

Finally, take in the view from the Shark Valley Visitor Center, which overlooks the entire area and really shows you how much area the Everglades cover. Simply stunning, simply gorgeous.

3.) Chokoloskee Bay

Chokoloskee Bay is approximately 16 km long and IA favorite place for anglers and water sports enthusiasts!

This place is full of wildlife, natural beauty, and beautiful waters too good to miss. Of course, while here you should also try your hand at kayaking or canoeing.

If you’re less inclined to do an upper body workout, get into one of the Boat tours departing from Chokoloskee on most days. Oh and meVisit the Ernest Hamilton Observation Tower right on the bay in Everglades City.

When planning a little foray through the streets on the Everglades City theme, consider some of the beautiful spots along the way. We loved seeing the City Hall and visiting the Everglades Museum.

Then head to the Everglades’ sweet Havana Café Chokoloskee Island. Their shrimp are so good and the Cuban treats are just too good to miss.

4.) Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center

Located just off the Ingraham Highway, visiting the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center is one of the best things to do in the Everglades for the nearby hiking trails.

Located at the Homestead entrance to Everglades National Park, the visitor center has a variety of exhibits, knowledgeable guides and rangers to guide you in the right direction for hiking trails in the area.

Plus, they can point you in the right direction for houseboat rentals in the Everglades. This is perfect if you want to extend your stay in this stunning part of Florida.

5.) Long jaw key

If camping is your thing, Long Pine Key will easily find the place for you. It’s one of the best things to do in the Everglades if you’re a camper but want quieter spots to pitch your tent. You see, it’s a little less well known than some of the larger campsites (which makes it a great place Relax and see the beautiful view in the area.

There is also a shed load of hiking trails and a lovely lake Surrounded by Rockland pine forests that are absolutely untouched. One of our favorites is the nearby Anhinga Trail, which is just a little way from Long Pine.

That being said, there are some stunning hiking trails right next to camp – the Long Pine Key Nature Trail is a must.

6.) Gumbo Limbo Trail

The Gumbo Limbo Trail gives you a nice glimpse into the Everglades ecosystem and is well worth tracking down while on your hikes.

As a self-guided path, it shows an ecosystem of hardwood hammocks that is absolutely unique and untouched. Enjoy the view through the gumbo limbo trees and watch out for the alligators!

7.) Mahogany hammock path

Another beautiful and self-guided trail, the Mahogany Hammock Promenade, is where you’ll find the largest living mahogany tree in the United States.

This trail is ideal for the whole family. It’s relatively short (0.5 mile long) and completely easy and ideal for those who need a more accessible trail to follow.

8.) Flamingo

Flamingo and the Flamingo Visitor Center are just a short hop from Bear Lake and are one of the first places to go when exploring the coast around the Rabbit Key Basin.

With As you explore the south coast around the visitor center, you’ll be pampered at campsites, hiking trails (the Coastal-Prairie Trail is epic), and kayaking routes.

Just be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the majestic manatee that visits the shores here.

9.) Royal Palm State Park

Royal Palm State Park was established in 1916 and is absolutely breathtaking to visit in the Everglades.

You will also find two of the most popular hiking trails in all of the Everglades. the Anhinga Trail and Gumbo Limbo Trail (both mentioned above) which are too beautiful to miss.

Just outside the park area is the Everglades Alligator Farm for their epic airboat rides and tours of the clearings.

Afterward, visit Schnebly Redland Winery for its delicious varieties and tastings. Yum!

10.) Big Cypress National Preserve

Located more than 50 miles from downtown Fort Lauderdale, Big Cypress National Preserve is breathtaking to visit!

Best of all, this area of ​​the Everglades is amazing to visit for ranger-led tours that offer the best of the conservation area. This is one of the best things to do in the Everglades if you want to learn more about an ecological statement from the reserve for yourself. They are totally fascinating.

In addition, Big Cypress National Preserve is an internationally recognized dark sky site.

That said, it’s absolutely incredible to see constellations, planets and more right in the park’s unpolluted sky.
