11 Greatest Issues to Do in Idaho – Hand Baggage Solely

The state of Idaho may be a little far from popular California or New York, but that doesn't mean it isn't amazing! You see, there are tons of the best things to do in Idaho across the state. Which, to be honest, is really easy to visit on a wider road trip to places like Yellowstone or the Grand Tetons.

Trust me, there's a lot more to Idaho than just potatoes! After visiting Idaho, I wanted to share some of my favorite stops to see during your visit. Now some are a little off the beaten path while others are really easy to find; Anyway, there are a couple of gems that I hope you will take a closer look at as you explore Idaho.

1. Yellowstone National Park

Okay, the vast majority of the incredible Yellowstone National Park is in neighboring Wyoming. That being said, there are a few more epic places to visit when exploring eastern Idaho that are well worth a visit.

You see, right on the Idaho border is the Bechler Ranger Station area, which is almost a forgotten entrance to Yellowstone. It's significantly quieter than the popular routes and provides fairly easy access to the backcountry trails that criss-cross the area. Now it should be noted that the road is not asphalted here, but is fully accessible in good weather, as the gravel route is maintained.

Upon arrival, visit the Cave Falls Trail which is absolutely adorable. As always, stick to the routes, always hike responsibly, and watch out for bears in the area.

Oh yeah, and let's not put any limits when visiting Yellowstone. Weave in and out as you explore national parks in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho! It's incredible.

2.) Crater of the moon

Visiting the Craters of the Moon National Monument is one of the best things to do in Idaho if you want to explore the state's epic diversity. You see, the craters of the moon are like a huge ocean of ancient lava flows and huge cinder cones that look like you are on another planet. Well, hence the name, I suppose!

Once you get here, head to Loop Drive which will take you into the beating heart of this national monument. Oh, and if you feel like stretching your legs, head to the North Crater Flow Loop Trail. Just stick to the trails, there is a fragile ecosystem in this area and you really don't want to leave any trace.

A day trip from Twin Falls (100 minutes drive away) is also easy to visit.

3.) Shoshone Falls

Shoshone Falls is located on the Snake River just south of Idaho and is one of the best waterfalls in Idaho. It's absolutely breathtaking and it's amazing to see the power behind these waterfalls.

After viewing the falls, take a stroll on the Snake River Canyon and learn about the history of the place. You see, tThe site also played a valuable role on Native American and First Nation trade routes.

Visiting the falls is one of the best things to do in Idaho if you want to see a completely different side of the state. It's almost like nature made a Niagara Fall here.

4.) Hell canyon

Don't let the name put you off, Hells Canyon is a whopping 10 miles long, the deepest river canyon in the country, formed by the Snake River. This is the kind of place you visit to brush up on your outdoor skills as well. You can also try your hand at white water rafting, fishing and hiking.

In all fairness, if you love the outdoors, you'll easily find that a visit to Hells Canyon is one of the best things to do in Idaho.

5.) Minidoka National Historic Site

Located in the Magic Valley in southern Idaho, Minidoka commemorates the imprisonment of thousands of Japanese immigrants during World War II.

Visit the Minidoka Internment Monument to ponder the history it represents, explore the nearby town of Jerome, or take a hike in the nearby trails. It's a great little stopover (for 45 minutes) as part of a wider road trip around Idaho.

6.) Old Idaho State Prison

Don't worry, you won't be locked up in this former state prison in the city of Boise.

Instead, take a historical walking tour of the building to explore Idaho prison life and the history of Idaho incarceration. The prison operated for over 100 years and was eventually closed due to a rioting fire. Ouch!

It may seem a little macabre, but it's no different than going to places like Alcatraz or Clink Alley in London, I suppose.

7.) Idaho State Museum

The Idaho State Museum in Boise has a variety of artifacts, history, and exhibits that can help you learn all about Idaho. Your collections are beautiful.

Learn all about Idaho and the development of the state, prison, and Native American history.

Plus, one of the best things to do in Idaho is when the weather changes for the worst since it's mostly inside.

8.) Hagerman Fossil Beds

Located on the main Boise-Twin Falls driveway, Hagerman Fossil Beds is one of the best places in Idaho to explore if you want a look at Pliocene fossils.

Horses are said to have developed in Hagerman in southern Idaho. You can even examine the fossils of a prehistoric horse.

But don't stress if horses are not your thing! You also discovered; Also mastodons, camels, prehistoric dogs and saber-toothed cats. You'll have to go to the visitor center to find most of these, but it's another nice little stop on your route around Idaho.

Then head to Thousand Springs State Park, which is a quick detour from I-84 and a must see! The gorge is beautiful.

9.) Sawtooth Mountains and Lakes

As part of the Idaho Rocky Mountains, the Sawtooth Mountains are totally huge and so dramatic that you can see them as you travel through Idaho. Now it's really easy to discover the Sawtooth Mountains and check out some of the hiking trails in this vast area if you also go to Alice Lake.

From here you can kayak, see El Capitan summit, and follow parts of trail 095 if you're looking for a nice view.

Depending on how much time you spend in the area, you might want to spend a few other days on the approximately 15 to 20 km trail from Redfish Lake to Saddleback Lake.

It's not the easiest hike (it gets harder the further you go) and you need to be experienced to get into it, but the views are well worth it.

Visiting the national reserve is possibly one of the best things to do in Idaho if you want to see the diverse landscape of this state.

Once you get here, watch out for the hundreds of arches, panholes, and giant joints protruding from the earth. For a longer hike, visit North Fork Circle Creek.

If you're short on time, head to the Flaming Rock Trai, which is a short but fairly intense workout.

11.) Rexburg

Rexburg is about 50 miles from the edge of Yellowstone and is a relatively small town to visit on your trip through Idaho.

Now it won't take you more than a couple of hours, but this is where you can stop, stretch your legs, and have a bite to eat before heading towards Yellowstone.

When you arrive, be sure to visit the Rexburg Temple, check out the Legacy Flight Museum, or venture out on the Cress Creek Nature Trail. For a big lunch, visit the Big Juds who serve a "Big Jud Special"! This is a full, 1 pound double burger filled with cheese and pickles. It's massive.
