1.) Douglas

As mentioned earlier, your first port of call will likely be Douglas. Take this as a sign and spend some time wandering the quaint little streets and coastlines.

While you’re here, stop by that The Manx Museum is one of the best things to do on the Isle of Man to learn about the island’s heritage. As you can see, the museum spans more than 10,000 years of island history and is a treasure trove of information. To be honest, when not in your museums you might want to make a mistake with this one!

Alternatively, you can stroll across Douglas Bay and discover the Tower of Refuge, which was built as a safety point for those potentially castaways!

Just outside of Douglas are the dramatic cliffs surrounding Marine Drive. Stop near the Pigeon Stream (beyond the Camera Obscura) before heading onto Port Soderick, which is also a stop on the Isle of Man Steam Railway.

2.) Castletown

Castletown is 20 minutes from Douglas and is another historic port city just a short hop from the main airport.

Although relatively small, exploring this ancient capital is one of the best things to do in the Isle of Man if you love its history.

Upon arrival, head to Rushen Castle to explore the 13th-century ruins that dominate the coast. The rooms are amazing to see including some of the original prisons that still exist here.

Then go over there to the Old House of Keys, the Nautical Museum and the Old Grammar School. You can easily spend a full day in Castletown and even take a stroll on Castletown Beach.

Crossing the island via Douglas, Laxey and Ramsey on the Manx Electric Railway is one of the best things to do on the Isle of Man that is absolutely unique.

The views from the tram are wonderful and it’s a throwback experience that takes you back to Victorian times! You’ll also see some of the island’s highest points along the way.

Just off the Isle of Man’s coast, the Calf of Man is a much smaller island that is absolutely stunning. To get here, you have to take the boats that depart from Port St. Mary and Port Erin across Calf Sound. These usually only run in good weather. So don’t be surprised if these are canceled due to changing weather!

Once on the human calf, you will enjoy seeing a bunch of birds on this beautiful and protected island. Simply amazing if you love your wildlife and want a little “off the net” time.

5.) Big Laxey wheel

20 minutes northeast of Douglas, the Great Laxey Wheel is a unique place not to be missed on the Isle of Man.

It was built in 1854 to pump water from the Great Laxey Mines. It’s one of the best places on the Isle of Man to explore the island’s heritage. Here you will learn more about the life of the miners and the historical significance of this place.

Oh, and don’t forget, just down the road is King Orry’s Tomb, the largest megalithic and ancient tomb in the entire Isle of Man.

Do you feel spicy? Stop by the nearby Ballacregga Bar for a quick lunch before continuing up the coast.

7.) Ramsey

Very close to the northeast point of the island, Ramsey is a beautiful little place to start exploring some of the island’s stories.

Located right on the west coast of the Isle of Man, Peel is a small town that has a lot to offer. I would even say that after Douglas it is one of the biggest cities to visit.

Upon arrival, head to Peel Castle, proud of St. Patrick’s Ise and connected by a small headland. Here you can visit the almost 1,000 year old castle ruins! It’s totally mind blowing and reminds me of Whitby Abbey for some reason.

Do you fancy an indoor spot? Go over to the House of Manannan, a museum named after the mythological sea god Manannan. Here you can learn about the Isle of Man’s Viking history which is so impressive. Plus there are plenty of pretty epic exhibits on what life was like on the old Isle of Man.

Oh, and don’t forget to get a bag of fish and chips from the cod and castle. Freshly fried, they are ideal for swallowing by the sea.

9.) The way of the seagull (Raad ny Foillan)

In the truest sense of the word, your opportunity to cross an entire island nation!

The Gull Trail (Raad ny Foillan) is one of the best things to do on the Isle of Man if you enjoy hiking.

Here you can stroll on the cliff trails and enjoy the breathtaking view of the whole island. However, it can take anywhere from 4 to 12 days to complete. So if you are looking for a challenge then the Seagull Path is for you!

10.) Glen Helen

Glen Helen is just inland from the town of Peel and is a must see if you want to be out in the country.

With beautiful riverside hiking trails and small waterfalls, Glen Helen is a fantastic place to visit with the family as it isn’t too strenuous and a lovely little pit stop to stretch your legs if you’ve been driving a lot.

Not really a full day experience, but still worth a look if you are in the area.
