Lake Erie is part of the Five Great Lakes area between Canada and the United States and is huge! Across international borders and with over 700 miles of coastline, there are tons of the best things to do around Lake Erie, especially in the US!

When I drove from New York City to Los Angeles, I spent a lot of time on Lake Erie. It is a huge area to explore and there is just so much to see. For ease of navigation, I’ll focus on the US gems to explore.

Now let’s be clear, exploring the 700+ miles of coastline (before even getting a glimpse of the islands) will be tough. To be honest, this distance would take weeks (if not more) to fully explore!

To help you focus on your trip to Lake Erie I have written down some gems that you really cannot miss. Hopefully this way you can find a good handful that are easy to get to on your road trip or vacation spot.

1.) Marblehead Lighthouse, Ohio

Located on the Ohio coast, the Marblehead Lighthouse is certainly one of the oldest (continuously operating) lighthouses in the United States.

Coupled with a trip through the cozy and small state park, this is one of the best things to do around Lake Erie when traveling between Cleaveland and Toledo. I drove on Highway 80 and you can easily turn into Avery if you want.

After hiking the lighthouse, be sure to visit the Marblehead Lighthouse Museum. It’s a pretty impressive place.

Do you fancy a bite? Visit the Marblehead Galley, whose yellow perch on Lake Erie is delicious and completely fresh.

2.) Kayaking in Harbor Yak, Ohio

If you’re visiting in the summer, kayaking is one of the best things to do around Lake Erie. especially on a warm day!

Nestled on the Ashtabula coast, it’s easy to experience a kayaking adventure as a stopover between Buffalo and Cleaveland.

Best Coast Water Sports, The North Coast Outpost and Harbor Yak have good equipment and loads of paddleboards and multi-rider boards to rent. This means that you usually don’t need to reserve in advance.

Then head to the informal and absolutely delicious briquette smokehouse for the famous brisket and rib platters.

3.) Liberty Aviation Museum, Ohio

In close proximity to Sandusky Bay, the Liberty Aviation Museum is very easy to visit when exploring the Marblehead Lighthouse (on the US side).

In this museum you will find a collection of aircraft from the Second World War, which is incredible to discover. There is also an amazing collection of aviation and other motor vehicles. However, you may want to miss this when you are not in your museums.

4.) Presque Isle (State Park), Pennsylvania

Presque Isle State Park, with miles of beaches and more than 3,000 acres, is well worth a visit if you’re into nature.

With numerous sporting activities; These include swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, biking, and roller blading. You are spoiled for choice.

If you don’t know where to rent a boat, check out Presque Isle Canoe and Boating Livery, which are the only rental companies in the park itself.

If you fancy a stroll, hit the trails around Gull Point or follow the Pine Tree Trail, which is absolutely lovely and relatively easy.

Then, head to the city of Erie and enjoy the view from the Bicentennial Tower!

6.) Sandusky Maritime Museum, Sandusky, Ohio

In Sandusky itself, you can learn so much more about the rich maritime history of the region and Lake Erie in the museum’s exhibitions.

From the ice harvest to the Sandusky Metro, it’s one of the best things to do around Lake Erie to get a full feel for the history here.

Yes, it’s not the largest museum in the world. But it’s definitely nice and a great little stop in the area.

7.) South Bass Island, Ohio

Located just off the coast of Gibraltar, South Bass Island is the larger island easily accessible via the Miller Ferry (a few miles from Port Clinton).

While on the island you can test your boating skills (at Put-in-Bay Watercraft Rentals) or just enjoy and explore the limestone cliffs and bays.

Oh, and don’t forget to stop by Perry’s Cave (with its limestone cave), visit the Lake Erie Islands Historical Museum, and grab a drink (or two) at The Keys – they have some delicious cocktails.

If you are looking for some little island hopping, visiting Kelleys Island is another small and easy visit for a morning or afternoon excursion.

A paradise for nature lovers. Here you can hike coastal trails to see the stunning glacier grooves, visit Kelleys Island Brewery (for a local brew), and take a kayak in the North Bay from Kelleys Island Kayak Rental.

9.) Lake Erie Vineyards, Ohio

Although the Laurentia Vineyard & Winery is a little offshore, one of the best things to do around Lake Erie is if you love your grapes.

Here you can enjoy world class wineries with locally inspired food in a rustic, relaxing log cabin style tasting room that is utterly lovely. In addition, many of them know their mixtures and varieties that they produce on site. So good!

Alternatively, check out Debonné Vineyards, the Kosicek Vineyards (a 3rd generation vineyard) or the Old Mill Winery for their Chardonnay.

Make sure you have a designated driver on hand!

10.) Cedar Point, Ohio

Known as the roller coaster capital of the world, Cedar Point is a huge 364 acre amusement park that is well worth a shout!

As the second oldest amusement park in the US (can you guess the first one?), It’s one of the best things any excitement seeker can do around Lake Erie!

Be sure to go with the retro coaster Blue Streak or go fast with the Magnum XL-200. You’ll scream so hard at speeds over 70 mph.

11.) Cleveland, Ohio

If you’re on Lake Erie after a city break, Cleveland is the stop for you. Here you can explore the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, enjoy one of the tailor-made blends in the 27 Club Coffee or take a look at the art museum.

If you’re not feeling a city break, drive a little out of Clealand and head to Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Brandywine Falls is beautiful!

12.) Buffalo, New York

Right on the Canadian border, the city of Buffalo is usually a place to see Niagara Falls. Don’t be fooled, but it has more to offer than its proximity to North America’s most famous waterfalls.

Here you enter the legendary Albright-Knox Art Gallery, which is so big. I love it! Oh, and be sure to discover Theodore Roosevelt’s first historic site, which is great for a self-guided tour.

For a belly filler, take a seat in the Pearl Street Grill for the roast beef hoagie bun. You will be so full that you will need a nap!

13.) Fairport Harbor, Ohio

About 30 minutes east of Clevland, Fairport Harbor is a cute little place that’s beautiful to visit for a couple of hours. After viewing Lake Erie from the Headland Dunes State Nature Preserve, make your way to Pickle Bill’s Lobster House which is an experience.

Totally laid back and casual, this is the place to go to snap up mountains of delicious lobster. Drizzled with butter, it’s a stop you make when you’re totally hungry.

14.) Barcelona Harbor Beach, New York

Exploring the port of Barcelona is one of the best things to do around Lake Erie when on the New York coast. Plus, it’s really easy to stop on your route by following the shore from Buffalo and heading west.

Make sure to visit the historic Barcelona Lighthouse, enjoy the beach, and head to the Johnson Estate Winery for tasty tips.
