It’s really fun and right next to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. This all means you can do both of these in one long afternoon.

3.) Centennial Olympic Park

Located downtown, this 21-acre public park is one of the best things to do in Atlanta when you’re in the mood for a relaxing time.

Now the park was originally built for the 1996 Olympics and can now be used for a simple lunch break or a full day short break from pounding the sidewalks.

For an institution, check out Mary Mac’s Tea Room, which has been around since 1945! Totally casual, it’s the kind of place that you enjoy great food and lots of it too. Be sure to try the catfish fillets or the slow-cooked roast beef. Oh, and you Georgia Peach Cobblers is everything!

On a sunny summer day, take a stroll through Grant Park, the oldest park in town! To me, it’s totally blissful, especially as it’s surrounded by the beautiful historic Victorian neighborhood nearby.

Additionally, the park is connected to the Civil War Museum, which makes it easier to bring the two together on one visit.

8.) Atlanta BeltLine

This former railway corridor is now a path that connects parks and different areas of the city. The BeltLine Trail was founded in 2005 and is well worth following the trails around Atlanta yourself.

If you feel like escaping the city limits on your own, head out on one of the hiking trails that follow the Chattahoochee River. For us, one of the best is the Vickery Creek Trail, which is just under 4 miles.

Now you don’t have to be a professional hiker to do this trail, but you will need a certain level of fitness as it can be a little tricky at times. It’s a well-marked trail to follow. Plus, you can see some waterfalls along the way.

11.) State Capitol Building

The State Capitol Building is one of the most beautiful buildings in Atlanta and a landmark! It houses government chambers and has a long history in the city. Additionally, you can see a number of prominent statues on the site.

For example, you can easily spot the statue of Martin Luther King Jr. and the one that was evicted for color. The latter statue depicts original 33, 33 African-Americans who were removed from Georgian lawmakers in the 19th century.

12.) BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir

This traditional Hindu mandir is easily one of our favorite buildings in all of Atlanta. Right on the outskirts of town, it is behind Tucker, relatively close to Lions Club Park.

Both inside and out are beautiful and a place not to be missed if you love a good piece or architecture.

About a 40-minute drive from downtown Atlanta, Starr’s Mill is a nice stop to see the centuries-old mill that still stands proudly on the riverside.

While you might only spend 20-30 minutes here, it’s close to the roadside and easy to get to on your drive from Atlanta to Columbus.
