Port Charlotte is on the west coast of Florida, about 90 minutes’ drive south of St. Petersburg. It is a city that is great for a day trip or weekend break while exploring the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. To help you get the most out of a trip, I wanted to introduce you to some of the best things to do in Port Charlotte during your visit.

Although Port Charlotte is sometimes missed instead of the other best places in Florida like Clearwater, it’s a great little stop on the way to South Florida.

Well, some say Port Charlotte is only for retirees, but don’t let that put you off! It has a nice charm and beautiful places around Gasparilla Sound that are totally beautiful.

1.) Stroll through Bayshore Live Oak Park

Bayshore Live Oak Park offers great views of the bay.

Not only that, strolling the beautiful coastal paths at sunset is one of the best things to do in Port Charlotte. You see, from here you get some stunning shades of orange that are too beautiful to miss.

If you’ve rented (or have) a canoe, you’ll find the jetty to take you out into the bay. Simply stunning, simply gorgeous.

2.) Visit Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park

Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park has more than 70 miles of coastline to explore. With a variety of hiking trails and routes, it’s the perfect place to take in the great outdoors near Port Charlotte.

The best trails can be found on the Eagle Point Trail, the Hidden Hammock Trail or the Three Lakes Trail – all nice and easy! One thing to keep in mind, be careful of alligators roaming this park. Keep a clear distance and never approach them.

3.) Find the North Charlotte Regional Park

This is one for the active among us! You see, North Charlotte Regional Park has it all Baseball fields, Football fields and a disc golf course to practice your swing.

Additionally, they recently opened a shiny new Olympic pool to test your water skills! Stroll nearby to the Charlotte County Fair, usually held in late January.

4.) Explore Gasparilla Island State Park

Gasparilla Island State Park is located in front of Port Charlotte, about a 30-minute drive from central Port Charlotte.

The island is well worth a visit and is connected to the mainland by the Boca Grande Causeway (from Placida). It is very easy to visit for a half day excursion.

Once you get here, be sure to check out the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum on the southern tip of the island.

It’s rich in history and has been around since the 19th century!

On the other side of the Peace River, Punta Gorda is another small place that’s just a stone’s throw from Port Charlotte.

Access is via Live Oak Point (across the bridge) and you can explore the Laishley Park area, which has plenty of little restaurants and places to relax.

One of the best things about Port Charlotte is the number of parks to explore. With a Ollie’s Pond Park is a beautiful and peaceful lake with a short but beautiful path. It’s the perfect place for bird watching.

7.) Stroll through the Audubon-Pennington Nature Park

Don’t be fooled by the small size of the Audubon Pennington Natural Park. It’s a head-turner if you’d like some nature trails to follow right into Port Charlotte itself.

Along the way, you’ll spot a bunch of birds in this park as well (which again should be skipped if that’s not your thing).

With three types of vegetation patches; Cyprus swamp, oak hammock, and pine forests The park feels so much bigger than you would expect.

Just be sure to wear a good pair of shoes when following the trails. It can get muddy in the lower parts of the park.

If you are looking for some adventure and water activities then Fantasea Scuba is a one stop dive site with the best instructors in Port Charlotte. As expected, all diving instructors are certified and experienced driving instructors – and above all very patient (for newbies like me).

Additionally, they rent a bunch of scuba gear, snorkel gear, and spearfishing gear, which is perfect if you don’t want to lug your gear here.

It really is one of the best things to do in Port Charlotte if you want to try your hand at scuba diving.

Port Charlotte Beach Park has a lot to offer, including fishing, canoeing, and kayaking (it’s time kayaking is a great rental service).

There are also pavilions and a fishing pier where you can relax with a picnic and enjoy dinner too!
