A runner of Color’s internal monologue

“When will I reach that high?” Many runners have asked this question, but as an actor and storyteller, Christopher highlights Rivas in his short film “Head On A Swivel”, not all runners have the same access to this feeling during a run. The video shows the thoughts and emotions of a color runner as told in Rivas’ internal narrative on an average jog: the anticipation of racial profiles, the fear of social interaction, and the fear of unjust retribution. “I created this piece in response to the murder of Ahmaud Arbery,” says Rivas. “I asked myself whether it is ever really possible to disappear at the height of a runner when the colored body always has to keep its head swiveling.” Rivas’ monologue in the film asks which rooms are safe and which “normal” actions are actually dangerous, but closes with a message of perseverance and defiance: He keeps running.
