A new AIARE winter backcountry travel safety quiz has cute rewards: a Weston Backcountry Backwood Splitboard or Summit Skis with custom artwork by Renan Ozturk. You can also win a scholarship for avalanche safety courses.
The fleeting snow cover and the pandemic stress this winter are reasons alone for recreational athletes, to give priority to avalanche formation. Avalanche victims across the country recently hit an all-time high with the highest loss recorded in more than a century.
To raise awareness, the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) started a campaign to win people over to avalanche safety. And it’s stimulated by unique backcountry gear.
After completing an online quiz, seven participants will receive equipment, avalanche course money or both to support their exploration tours through the hinterland. The test developed by AIARE includes basic knowledge of avalanche safety. It is similar to the course finale of “Leisure training: AIARE 1. ”
Participants fill in their answers to 26 multiple-choice questions and receive corrections and additional resources at the end. The finishers will be entered into the drawing of equipment and grants regardless of their results.
The grand prize winner will receive two setups of their choice (splitboard or ski) plus $ 1,000 to support an AIARE certified course for them and their touring partner.
2nd place price
At this level, the winner will receive a pair of skis or splitboards and $ 500 for an AIARE-certified course.
3rd place price
Four separate winners will receive $ 300 for an AIARE certified course.
The campaign’s eye-catching limited edition gear is not available in retail stores. AIARE, Tincup whiskey, and Weston backcountry has teamed up with landscape artist Renan Ozturk, an expedition climber and filmmaker, to create the artistic goods.
On a backpacking trip last fall Ozturk painted the custom artwork presented on the Backwoods splitboard ($ 899) and Summit ski ($ 849) for competition winners.
How to enter
Past and current students of an AIARE course 2020-2021 can take the quiz for free. “When a student takes an AIARE course, they can be included in the drawing at the end of their embedded test,” said Vickie Hormuth, AIARE executive director.
Didn’t complete an AIARE course this winter? Donate US $ 100 to take the quiz and win a prize tincupwhiskey.com or avtraining.org. The funds raised will support the creation of a free virtual avalanche formation.
The nonprofit will use the test results to inform their future curriculum. She will also use the data to establish a base of knowledge from alumni and the public.
The avalanche knowledge test will be carried out from February 25 to April 14, 2021. The winners will be announced on April 15th.
