Swedish camping brand Dometic is taking over Front Runner Vehicle Outfitters, a South African brand that specializes in vehicle-based outdoor adventures.
The privately owned Front Runner Vehicle Outfitters employ 320 full-time employees at its Johannesburg headquarters. The company sells its roof racks, roof tents, storage products and loading bars on four continents through 600 dealers and e-channels. Around half of sales come from e-commerce.
Initially, no details of the acquisition costs announced today were released. However, net sales last fiscal year were over $ 35 million and Front Runner claims a healthy operating margin. The move extends Dometic’s already expansive line into a new segment for the Swedish brand.
I tested a Front Runner Vehicle Outfitters Slimline II roof rack system and can confirm the robust off-road capability and aesthetics. The luggage rack system is platform based and offers flexibility to carry a variety of equipment or accessories in addition to the bike and kayak mounts I have on board.

Dometic acquires Front Runner Outfitters
Dometic is already a well-known and respected supplier of almost all items that could fit in a motorhome or other outdoor recreational vehicle. These products include cooling, climate and power control, hobs, sinks, toilets and awnings.
The brand noted that Front Runner Vehicle Outfitters’ high quality line of products only strengthen their vehicle-based outdoor market position.
“I am delighted to welcome Front Runner Vehicle Outfitters and their employees to Dometic. With this acquisition, we are strengthening our supply and distribution network for the outdoor market, ”said Juan Vargues, President and CEO of Dometic.
“Our strategy for profitable expansion in mobile living is based on a combination of organic and acquisitive growth. This is our fourth announced acquisition this year and our pipeline of potential future acquisitions remains strong. “
