The Eppinger Daredevle Spoon is the industry standard for this style, and both the red / white and diamond five varieties are undeniable favorites. As a heavier pike bait, the Daredevle is easy to cast and retrieve, making it a great choice for new anglers. Because of their simple design, spoons are often considered a good bait when targeting weed beds, which are often home to Monster Northerners.

Rapala has been making high quality fishing lures since 1936 and has perfected its craft ever since. The Shad Rap has always been a popular bait for bass fishing, and the larger equivalent – the Super Shad Rap – has made a name for itself as a pike and musk butcher.

The durable construction and hardware of the Super Shad Rap are designed to withstand fierce attacks from larger, aggressive pike. The variety of colors and designs make it the perfect choice for any condition. Anglers like to cast this bait repeatedly, but it is also the best choice when looking for pike.

Its lifelike floating design allows anglers to access it at will – dropping it to a depth of nearly 10 feet, tumbling it through the periphery of weed beds, or pulling monsters out by fishing over underwater structures.

If, like many pike anglers, you want to target thick weed beds, the Johnson Silver Minnow Spoon is the place for you. As mentioned with the Daredevle spoon above, this style of bait is unshakable for most dedicated pike fishermen. Johnson's Silver Minnow has the bonus of being virtually weed-free.

With the hook, which is neatly hidden behind the spoon itself, the Silver Minnow can effortlessly sneak through the thickest reeds, lily pads and underwater weeds. The natural wobble of this lure is an excellent mimicking bait fish with its lightning and vibration. The Silver Minnow comes in many colors and sizes, although the 3/4 inch option is a favorite. It's just as effective as jigging, twitching, and mopping the floor.

Try adding some pork to the hook to add even more appeal to the monsters lurking in the weeds.

  • Top choice for fishing for thick weeds
  • Easy bait to retrieve, yet productive
  • Durable design with many colors and sizes available

  • Not the most exciting of all

Tips for fishing for pike

The pike is generally an aggressive fish that loves to hit flashy, large baits. It's an ambush hunter, and you can often hide them in weeds or tangled wood.

But you also go deeper in open water or on rocky outcrops, so very little terrain is forbidden when looking for pike. Here are some tips to find and stimulate the strike.

Fish for pike near weeds and structure

Pike tend to hang around in shallower water than many species or to drive in bays in the morning and evening. The best way to hook a pike is to toss it on the edge of weed beds and tangles of fallen trees, especially if they fall into deeper water. Machine the edges of these types of structures and try different angles and depths.

Pike are aggressive, so don't be surprised if your first throw into a tangle of paintbrushes provokes a punch. But they can be picky! So be sure to try out multiple casts when editing a piece of structure.

Retrieval speed and depth vary

You can pick up a pike anywhere from the surface of the water to the bottom of deep lakes. We even recorded them while trolling downriggers for lake trout at over 60 feet deep! So it is important to change the retrieval speed and depth until you figure out where they hang and what kind of action will trigger a strike.

Pike can be a picky eater at times. If you follow but don't get any hits, you'll change your retrieval speed dramatically during a cast. Start staggering quickly, then stop completely for a second before retrieving more slowly. Accelerate again. Vary it and do it randomly. Throw in a few jigs with the tip of your pole. Once you've figured out what the pike wants, you can usually replicate it and get consistent hits.

Use a leader and pliers

Once you've looked into a pike's mouth, you'll never want to put your hand there again. You have some big, sharp teeth! For this reason, you should fish for pike with a wire leader. Otherwise, you can expect your line to be bitten off frequently.

You'll also need to have pliers – and probably a net – on the boat. Pike can beat up wildly after boating. So it is best to catch them and keep them in the water, especially if you are planning on releasing them. Remove the hook with pliers. you don't want your hand in that mouth! After unhooking, give the pike a few moments to recover before pushing it away from the boat in case you let go of it.

Pike is an explosive, fun fish to catch and a pretty good table if you clean it up properly. Good luck on the water and tight lines!
