Hobie is growing choices, strikes into inflatable kayak, SUP market

In 1950, founder Hobie Alter created his first surfboard. It’s now 2021 and the brand has come a long way.

Hobie just announced the launch of its Mirage iTrek series. a collection of inflatable kayaks (and a fairly unique inflatable standup pedal board).

The new series consists of five models: the Fiesta (a multi-person kayak; i.e. party boat), the iEclipse (a standup pedal board) that Mirage iTrek 9 (an ultra-light kayak) that Mirage iTrek 11 (a standard kayak) and the Mirage iTrek 14 Duo (a classic tandem).

“The new Mirage iTrek series is again a product of Hobie’s innovation DNA,” said Doug Skidmore, Hobie CEO. “We’re also excited to add an inflatable raft to our unrivaled Mirage Eclipse line of pedalboards that will allow water enthusiasts to explore new ways with Hobie.”

Hobie Inflatable Kayaks: Highlights

The Fiesta is “unlike anything you’ve seen,” describes Hobie. It is a massive inflatable multi-person party pedal kayak. It seats four people as well as room in the weight restriction for a couple of fridges or your furry friends.

At the other end of Hobie’s newest boats is the Mirage iTrek 9 ultralight. This ultra-light inflatable boat weighs just 20 pounds (compared to an average inflatable SUP that weighs 22-28 pounds). It can easily be packed to the size of a checked bag when traveling and doubles as a pedal kayak or SUP. Simply remove the seat and pedals and grab the included paddle for standup paddle mode.

It’s worth noting that there are already a few such double SUP / kayaks on the market, but still few. And this is a big first for Hobie.

Hobie has been making surfboards for a long time, Catamaransand traditional kayaks. But in 2000 Hobie introduced his first tandem, then in 2005, his first SUPExpansion of its reach to an even wider water sports market.

The brand’s latest products are an amalgamation of Hobie’s Original products all the way up its latest technology. His ultimate vision is to get everyone on the water.

The full 2021 Hobie iTrek series will be available in March 2021.
