14ERS: Peak Bagger Partners With Nonprofit to Raise Disaster Relief Funds. Kentuckian Brittney “Bert” Woodrum is chasing after an impressive goal: climb all 58 Colorado 14ers — one a day, every day — in 3 months. Woodrum is doing the 14er project to raise awareness and funding for families around the world that have been displaced after disasters.
She’s working with ShelterBox, a global disaster relief organization, and will be carrying a ShelterBox on her back up each peak as a nod to the cause. Woodrum is 10 peaks into the project.
TOUR: 19-Year-Old Wins Stage 4 of Virtual Tour de France. April Tacey, 19, of Drops Cycling team took her second win of the Virtual Tour de France in the women’s race in Stage 4, winning by just a few meters. This stage, known as the “casse-pattes” or “leg-breaker,” was 45.8 km (28.5 miles) long.
EVEREST: National Geographic launches Virtual Reality Everest Summit Experience. As an extension of Nat Geo’s 2019 Everest Expedition, the organization (along with Rolex) is launching the Everest AR Experience, an interactive AR feature on Instagram that will allow users to virtually climb Mt. Everest.
The virtual climb will allow users to jump between different 360-degree views at various spots on the mountain. It’s definitely not the same as summiting in person, but it’s still a pretty cool experience given many of us can’t travel.
COVID: Altra Athlete Battling Respiratory Illness in Hospital. Tommy Rivers has snagged victories in endurance events like the Trans Rockies 120-mile run and Stagecoach 100-mile as well as placed in the top two in a host of other events.
Now, the 35-year-old Altra ambassador is struggling against an even greater challenge. A GoFundMe launched last week seeks to help relieve some financial burden from the Rivers family as he rests in the ICU with “pneumonia/Covid related symptoms.”
In just 48 hours, the campaign has raised more than $100,000, but it still needs nearly $50,000 to hit its goal. You can learn more and contribute here.
