Wondering where all the shoe materials, plastics, and worn out soles go after you’ve thrown your shoes? They are usually not recycled. But Teva wants to change that.
In 2020, Teva changed every one of its sandal straps 100% traceable REPREVE recycled plastic yarn. Building on this vision of keeping its sandals sustainable, Teva has announced its TevaForever recycling program, a partnership with the international recycling guru TerraCycle.
“Teva’s long-term vision is to work towards solutions to one day close the loop by recycling old Teva sandals into new ones,” Teva wrote. The program is designed to give Teva sandals a second life – as something other than sandals.
Customers can send their retired sandals to TerraCycle for free. TerraCycle then cleans them, disassembles them and processes the recycled materials for many new purposes (such as playground surfaces, sports fields and track terrain).
How to recycle Teva sandals in 3 steps
- Visit Teva.com to request a prepaid shipping label.
- Send your Teva sandals or flip-flops.
- That’s it. TerraCycle and Teva take care of the rest.
A note: Teva is not yet accepting models of shoes or boots for recycling, but it hopes to do so in the future.
“Teva sandal owners can now rest assured that when their favorite pair of sandals is finally worn out, they will no longer feel guilty about throwing them away,” said TerraCycle founder Tom Szaky.
