While the 2022 Nissan Frontier may not be the all-new truck many of us have hoped for, it does offer a bold new look, tons of new technology, and impressive utility.
The current second generation Nissan Frontier has been on the market since 2005. Some quality updates have been seen over the years but not a proper update. Of course, Nissan has rebuilt its proven midsize truck frame and drivetrain with brand new bodies and loaded it with the latest technology for 2022.
The truth is that buyers probably don’t care that the basics aren’t entirely new as the Frontier has been thoroughly upgraded to compete with the best midsize trucks on the market today.
2022 Frontier Bold New Look
The 2022 Frontier looks like a brand new model and fits the design of Nissan’s new, modern direction. A huge frontal area broken up by a massive grille and large, distinct headlights are the first things to catch your attention.
Then you notice the bulging hood with lines reminiscent of the Frontier’s big brother, the titanium. And the profile looks completely different too. Muscular fenders and larger truck loading areas make the truck look considerably larger and sportier than the current Frontier generation.
The PRO-4X and PRO-X models from Frontier get even more aggressive flared fenders, painted light alloy wheels with Lava Red center caps, LED headlights, fog lights and LED daytime running lights.
Under the hood, it has the same 3.8L V6 that was first introduced in the 2020 Frontier. It offers 310 horsepower as well as 281 pound-feet of torque. The V6 is supported by a nine-speed automatic transmission and offered with a 2WD or shift-on-the-fly 4WD transfer case.
Frontier is getting disc brakes everywhere too (somewhat class leader Tacoma still hasn’twith rear drum brakes). Nissan shows its best with this feature, as strong braking power on and off the road is of great importance.
Within the 2022 Nissan Frontier
A complete refresh of the interior makes the Frontier a real competitor the US truck market. A largest 9-inch color touchscreen in its class dominates the dashboard, while behind the steering wheel is a 7-inch display for the advanced driver assistant.
Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as available WiFi ensure that you are always connected. Inside the 2022 Frontier you will find many USB-A and USB-C ports as well as 12 V sockets. The available wireless charging and 110V sockets ensure that all of your personal electronics remain charged.
New interior looks
The look of the brand new interior, Nissan said, was “inspired by adventure gear.” It looks sturdy, modern, and functional to us, which will no doubt appeal to a wide audience, especially those looking for outdoor adventure.
You can choose between simple charcoal or sandstone for the interior or, even better in our opinion, the PRO-4X / PRO-X charcoal with lava-red accents (in fabric or leather). The PRO-4X / PRO-X models also have special accents for the instrument panel and door trim, as well as improved LED interior lighting.
Refined space, storage
Besides looking good, the new interior should be a really nice place to spend time. Only when we get behind the wheel can we get real insights. But it should be a quiet and relaxed place.
Acoustic laminated glass for the front door, additional insulation, and an improved rear carpet should help reduce street noise in the cabin. Hydraulic cab mounts are designed to reduce road vibrations by 80%. In connection with the new standard weightless seats, which are supposed to “offer initial softness with lateral support”, long hours should pass without any problems before your next adventure destination.
We could always use more storage space for our gear, and Nissan took this into account in Frontier 2022. The center console offers 4 liters of storage space, while the door pockets offer even more space. We have 6.5 liters of storage space in the front door and 5.7 liters in the back door. The small storage compartment on the instrument panel is a nice touch for sunglasses and the like.
Nissan Frontier Off Road
The current trend are really robust and powerful off-road vehicles. Nissan is answering this call on several fronts.
First of all, all 4WD Frontier models receive a hill descent control and all models a hill start assistant. A four-wheel locking system is also available on 4WD models to aid traction on non-slip surfaces. The suspension has been updated via the outbound setup and includes urethane bumpers to smoothen the ride after major impact events, whether it’s big potholes on your local town street or big rocks off the road.
The 2022 Frontier also has an intelligent all-round view monitor system with moving object detection and off-road mode. These features greatly improve obstacle detection and off-road driving.
The big story for on the go is the new 2022 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X with all-wheel drive. This premium off-road model has an E-Locker at the rear, Bilstein off-road shock absorbers, a Dana rear axle and full underrun protection plates. It also gets 31.6-inch AT tires wrapped around 17-inch alloy wheels. This is the 2022 Frontier adventure model we would want in the backcountry.
2022 Nissan Frontier: a workhorse
While the Frontier will no doubt be a good everyday vehicle in the city and Weekend adventure companionIt’s set up for work too. In particular, the bed offers more capacity with higher sidewalls as well as an available spray bed liner for durability.
To secure all your adventure equipment, the bed is equipped with four lashing straps. You can choose it with the Utili-Track channel system for the ultimate in versatile load securing. Optional LED charging lights are available in the bed, making it easy to find your gear in the dark. A new dampened tailgate assistance system makes it easier to raise and lower the tailgate.
The border can drag yours RV trailer or anything else up to 6,720 pounds (on 2WD S or SV Frontier models). Trailer Sway Control is also standard on the 2022 Frontier, which significantly improves towing confidence.
The border can also carry up to 1,610 pounds. That agrees with all frontiers medium-sized competitors.
Frontier models, accessories, prices
There are many 2022 Frontier models to choose from, both in the 2WD and 4WD, but all come with four doors. You can also choose between King Cab and Crew Cab, as well as 5- and 6-foot beds.
And if you want even more choices, you’re in luck. The Frontier is available in four classes: S, SV, PRO-X and PRO-4X. The PRO-4X is the ultimate sporty off-road version of the Frontier, while the PRO-X gives you all the sporty looks in a 2WD package without the off-road upgrades.
We all love making our vehicles our own, and Nissan plans to bring more than 85 OEM accessories to Frontier for the start of 2022. These include, for example, a sports bar, off-road step rails with removable steps, a NISMO suspension kit, additional off-road lighting, ladder racks and even tents.
No word on pricing yet, but we expect prices to start at just under $ 30,000 and the premium Frontier PRO-4X models to cost nearly $ 50,000. Expect the 2022 Nissan Frontier to hit dealerships this summer.
