The best way to lease a motorhome

Motorhome rentals are booming. This is what you need to know to rent an RV.

With many vacation options discontinued due to COVID-19, RV rentals and purchases skyrocketed in summer 2020. So there is a fair chance that you are new to the RV market and want to learn more about this type of camping and road trips.

We spoke to Paige Bouma, Vice President of RV Trader and an enthusiastic RVer herself. She gave some tips and tricks for a successful RV rental that will get you on the way to a great summer vacation.

RV Rentals and COVID-19

“Everyone wants to be in a motorhome now. It's such a hot topic, ”said Bouma. “Our site traffic is the highest ever. We have record numbers of people looking for RVs, and our dealer inquiries are higher than ever. "

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone considering vacationing. Since international travel is discontinued and even air travel is unattractive for many, a motorhome holiday looks pretty appealing.

Mobile homes and camping are of course suitable for social distance. As Bouma put it, "It's the perfect vacation for now."

If you dive into the world of motorhomes, you have to pay attention to many things. Should you buy an RV (a big obligation) or rent it? And what type of camper would you like to try?

Rent or buy a motorhome? Class A, B, C or 5th wheel?

For many newcomers to the world of motorhomes, renting makes a lot of sense. Not only do you get a beautiful, modern vehicle in excellent condition, you are also not bound to it for the duration of a loan.

Here are some things to keep in mind when dealing with rentals.

 • Do you want something you can drive or a towable unit that you attach to your own vehicle? "When driving is a big part of the road trip, Class A, B and C drivers are great," said Bouma. "But if you don't go that far and want to leave your base camp and explore the area, the detachability of a fifth wheel can be more logical."
 • If you don't have a full-size pickup, it's usually easier to rent the entire package in a single unit.
 • How many people will sleep in the unit?
 • What types of toys do you want to take with you? (Jet skis, golf carts, ATV, bicycles)
 • Where are you going? Will there be electricity and water? Or will you be a remote campsite that many RVs call “boondocking”?

If you are sure that buying is the right way, check out our guide to choosing the best motorhome. Even for tenants, this offers a good introduction to the myriad possibilities, from roof tents to full-size Winnebagos.

How much does a motorhome rental cost?

Bouma said that the price of renting a motorhome varies a lot depending on the type of motorhome. Intelligent tenants also consider additional prices that can add up quickly.

<img class = "alignnone size-full wp-image-36348" title = "Winnebago indulge inside rear" src = "https://gearjunkie.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/revel-interior- rear.jpg "alt =" Winnebago indulge inside rear” width=”900″ height=”600″ srcset=”https://gearjunkie.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/revel-interior-rear.jpg 900w, https://gearjunkie.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/revel-interior-rear-300×200.jpg 300w, https://gearjunkie.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/revel-interior-rear-768×512.jpg 768w, https://gearjunkie.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/revel-interior-rear-700×467.jpg 700w” sizes=”(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px”/>

She explained that the average cost of a rental starts at around $ 75 a night for a pop-up camper. RV Trader's weekly RV rental is $ 119 per night. Prices go up with a Class A of around $ 307 a night and a Class C of around USD 228.

Then think about what is included in the rental price and what is not. "If you want to rent, you need to consider insurance (which is usually not covered by your general auto insurance).

Some other unexpected fees to consider:

 • Breakdown assistance
 • Security deposits
 • Charges for gray or black water that is not emptied
 • propane
 • Non-refundable deposit
 • Can you pick up early or pick up late and is there a fee?
 • Cleaning fees
 • Pet fees
 • Generator fees
 • Miles included per day

Does a motorhome include bed linen and kitchenware?

Finally, make sure you research your booking. Does it contain things like bed linen, towels and pots and pans?

"You have to think these things through when packing," Bouma added. "And these can be additional fees if you want them."

Motorhomes: A smaller rental option

If you don't need the size of a large RV, you should rent a van. Converted vans or mobile homes offer you the opportunity to sleep in your vehicle. They are also easier to drive and get to smaller places such as city parking lots.

If you want to spend a lot of time outdoors, this type of rental, like Escape Camper Vans, offers a turnkey option. With equipped minivans, full-size vans, and even jeeps with rooftop tents, you can go outdoors with prices starting at around $ 115 a day.

For those who want to be a little further off the tourist path, there is another alternative. There are currently many small rental companies that offer fleets with equipped "adventure vehicles" that offer all-wheel drive, aggressive tires and camping setups.

Most are smaller outfits with only a few rigs to rent. Therefore, regionally search for “rugged RV rentals” or “off-road RV rentals” to find places like Rugged Van Rentals.

Sportsmobile also rents vans and equipped trucks to various adventure destinations. For those looking for a slightly wilder adventure, off-road rental offers access to areas that larger RVs cannot access with less space.

Peer-to-peer motorhome rental

A relatively new way to get a motorhome is to rent a motorhome that is idle in someone else's driveway. Outdoorsy was founded in 2015 and is one of the world's largest marketplaces for motorhome rental. Its mission is to "mobilize the more than 20 million unused RVs around the world to ensure that everyone has access, choice and opportunity to enjoy outdoor experiences safely and empower RV owners, realizing life-changing financial benefits.
The new Outdoorsy vehicle purchase program not only offers many options for renting motorhomes, it also enables individual motorhome buyers and rental fleet managers to purchase, finance and access insurance directly from the factory. You now get this in addition to being able to rent the motorhome on the Outdoorsy marketplace.

Read more here in our detailed article on renting motorhomes outdoors.

The competition with Outdoorsy is the RVShare peer-to-peer rental market. The store rented more than 1 million days of RV in 2019 and continues to be strong. So it's definitely worth buying RVShare while searching for rental properties in your area. One of the cool things about RVShare is that there are many options, from small teardrop trailers to Airstream campers that you may not find on other rental platforms.

Route planning

Once you've booked a motorhome, the fun part begins. Plan the route!

Planning the route for a motorhome is a little more than a typical road trip, she noted. Remember that navigating parking lots, small streets, bridges and underpasses is much more difficult.

If you have opted for a more aggressive rental, you should consider subscribing to onX Offroad Maps. We have tested the service and love what it can do for off-grid adventure planning.

But you also have the freedom to avoid restaurants if you wish. If you fill up your fridge and pantry, you can only eat in the camper at every stop on the roadside.

And this can leave more time for adventures along the way. So check the tire indicators and start driving. However, book some campsites in advance. You won't be alone out there.
