As an enthusiastic cyclist and athlete, I die a little inside Every time I have to get in my car to hurry somewhere. On some days I get enough of it so that I can tow my toddler in our beloved Thule Chariot while we run errands.

But since I got pregnant again, this also had to be put on hold because my growing belly (and my tiredness) made longer journeys more and more difficult. I needed a new way to drive. And an electric cargo bike seemed like the perfect solution.

In the past 3 months, our neighborhood has tested a variety of amazing electric cargo bikes. We took everything with us, from babies, children, dogs, wood and inflatable SUPs to huge purchases at the Costco and farmers market. I am happy to inform you that I have never got into our car for trips to the city. If our destination is within 15 miles, we ride cargo bikes.

First week of commuting: what I learned

In my first week I learned a lot about commuting by bike. Profit from my mistakes! Continue reading…

Ever since we put bicycles into our daily lives, running errands has been much more fun. So much so that my group of neighbors and children actually go voluntarily! We no longer have to worry about rush hour traffic. And regardless of the design, the motorcycles can carry almost as much as a car without polluting the environment.

The five best motorcycles we tested are highlighted, categorized and checked below. They were all outstanding in their unique way. But before we dive in, read the jargon below that explains the different types of bikes.

Best cargo bike styles

Longjohn: These have the loading box at the front with the front wheel facing outwards. Some also have the capacity for another passenger to ride on their back. This style requires a bit of practice when you first get in, as it behaves a little differently than a traditional bike.

Long tail: These ride more like a traditional bicycle and offer space for up to three small passengers (children) riding in the rear. Most can also fit an attachment seat for younger children (from 9 months).

Front loading trike: These have two wheels and the cargo box at the front. This stable style can accommodate up to four children in the box and sometimes for an extra child or panniers on the back.

Yuba's mission is to make bicycles that can easily carry children, equipment, and groceries while bringing a big smile to everyone's face (including onlookers). Aside from its fantastic name, we love the Spicy Curry for its robust, tank-like feel. Even when it's loaded and our son waves back and forth on the back, we hardly notice it.

For a little more money, you can choose different bike add-ons depending on your lifestyle. We wanted to make this bike our main bike to take our son to preschool. That's why we chose the adjustable climbing poles ($ 200) and a Yepp Maxi Easy Fit child seat ($ 220).

Our son loves the combination of a seat and a climbing frame. He can go high so that he can see mom or dad and hold on whenever he feels like it. We later added the 2-Go Cargo Bags ($ 199) and the Bread Basket ($ 200). This has more than doubled our carrying capacity.

The frame looked big at first glance. But after I put the cockpit and the seat on my 5 & # 39; & # 39; – 1 & # 39; & # 39; – had set the height, I was pleasantly surprised at how natural and comfortable it felt. It was easily the most used bike in the neighborhood. It's easy to adjust the size of the bike, and it fits a variety of heights.

The components consist of a Shimano Deore 10-speed adjuster and Shimano disc brakes. And although I was initially careful with the non-internal hub, I was getting better at how much it felt like on all my other bikes. The large front wheel smoothes bumps. It's smooth enough that my son regularly falls asleep on the way home from school.

The motor is a very powerful and smooth Bosch Performance CX center drive with a 36V 400Wh battery. There are four levels of support: Eco, Tour, eMTB and Turbo. All of this is easy to click on the control panel, which also shows the mileage, range and speed.

With a single charge, I can go up to 55 miles in Eco mode or 25 miles in full Turbo mode. The eMTB setting changes between all modes depending on how I drive, and I have an average between 30 and 40 miles.

This bike was also the most used by four families in our neighborhood. It's easy to adjust, feels most like a regular bike, and can pull up to 300 pounds. At 60 pounds and 8 feet 2 inches long, it's not that easy to store. But it will stand up to your average car in terms of load capacity, length and price!

Weight: 60 lbs. (without the add-ons)
Length: 6 & # 39;
Load capacity: 300 lbs.
Offer: 25-55 miles depending on mode and capacity
Price: $ 4,500
Advantages: Rides like a normal bike, can fit a wide range of people, robust
Disadvantage: Can be difficult to store on the expensive side
Best for: Errands in the city, pick-up and delivery services for children, dogs, large grocery stores or hardware stores

Best compact, daily commuter: Tern GSD S00 folding bike ($ 4,999-5,799)

<img class = "alignnone wp-image-76674 size-large” title=”Tern GSD Electric Cargo Bike” src=”https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/TernGSD-700×379.jpg” alt=”Tern GSD Electric Cargo Bike "width =" 700 "height =" 379 "srcset =" https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/TernGSD-700×379.jpg 700w, https: //s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/TernGSD-300×163.jpg 300w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/TernGSD -768×416.jpg 768w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/TernGSD.jpg 1200w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads /2019/08/TernGSD-600×325.jpg 600w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/TernGSD-610×330.jpg 610w, https://s3.amazonaws.com /images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/TernGSD-185×100.jpg 185w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/TernGSD-369×200.jpg 369w "sizes = "(maximum width: 700px) 100vw, 700px”/>

The Tern GSD is simply a remarkable bike. Many of the complaints about cargo bikes are that they are large, heavy, impossible to transport, and difficult to store. All of that (except weight) is turned upside down with the Tern GSD, which stands for "Get Stuff Done".

Tern Bikes is known for its ingenuity in the manufacture of folding bikes. When the brand released a cargo bike that was the length of a regular commuter bike and could be folded to fit easily in most medium-sized SUVs or minivans, many commuters (including us) noticed it.

The bike even stands vertically on the luggage rack, so that it takes up little space when stored. For the urban family who lives in a residential building, for people with limited garage space or for anyone who just doesn't want to deal with a large classic cargo bike, the tern is the answer.

Other special features that make the GSD stand out are its 440 pound carrying capacity and the ability to install two powerful Bosch batteries. This gives it an impressive range of up to 155 miles. From the puncture protection tires from Green Guard to the stepless internal gearing, this bike is clearly designed for durability.

Photo credit: Jason Cornell

As with the other motorcycles, you can customize it as you like. We chose the Clubhouse basket ($ 200), the Cargo Hold panniers ($ 175), and a Thule Yepp Maxi child seat ($ 220). We were pleased to find out that the cargo panniers with the Yepp Maxi seat above were still usable. And since the batteries, panniers and luggage carriers are lower than your average bike, the handling and driving experience for the driver and front passenger is very smooth and comfortable.

Like all the other cargo bikes on this list, it fits a range of riders from 5 ’to 6’. 5 & # 39; & # 39 ;. The unique adjustment of handlebars, seat post and stem makes it even faster and easier to find a perfect cockpit for drivers of different sizes. We used this bike exclusively for a whole week to see how quickly we would need to charge it. It lasted all week. We did 90 miles with a mix of tour and eMTB mods and still showed two out of five battery rods.

At $ 4,999 with a single battery and $ 5,799 with a double battery, it's priced in the middle of the pack. But we voted to be one of the most versatile, long-lasting and smoothest rides of all.

Weight: 70 lbs. (with a battery)
Length: 6 & # 39;
Folded length: 71 "x 16" x 33 "
Load capacity: 440 lbs.
Offer: Up to 200 km
Price: $ 4,999-5,799
Advantages: Stem / handlebar / seat post can be folded in 5 seconds, so that they fit in many vehicles. can carry a lot of equipment and people; compact for e-bikes; The attention to detail seems to be highest of all motorcycles. Overall, just an outstanding design
Disadvantage: 20-inch wheels can be a little hard on bumpy ground
Best suited for: Ultimate family utility bike in one size

Best children's tractor: Bunch Original Family Cargo Bike ($ 2,499)

<img class = "Alignnone wp-image-76677 size-large” title=”Bunch family cargo bike” src=”https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/BunchFamilyCargoBike-700×379.jpg” alt=”Bunch Family Cargo Bike "width =" 700 "height =" 379 "srcset =" https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/BunchFamilyCargoBike-700×379.jpg 700w, https: / /s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/BunchFamilyCargoBike-300×163.jpg 300w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/BunchFamilyCargoBike- 768×416.jpg 768w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/BunchFamilyCargoBike.jpg 1200w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/ 2019/08 / BunchFamilyCargoBike-600×325.jpg 600w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/BunchFamilyCargoBike-610×330.jpg 610w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/ images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/BunchFamilyCargoBike-185×100.jpg 185w, https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.gearjunkie.com/uploads/2019/08/BunchFamilyCargoBike-369×200.jpg 369w "Sizes = "(maximum width: 700px) 100vw, 700px”/>

This crowd-stop trike with front loader receives highlights for its lower price range (compared to other e-cargo bikes) and easy assembly. It literally showed up in my house, fully assembled using a semi-trailer. All we had to do was take off the packaging, adjust the seat and it was ready to go.

The large cargo box can accommodate up to four children and comes with comfortable pillows and user-friendly shoulder straps. Within a few weeks we took it out with all the freight combinations: a dog and two children, three children and a cooler full of snacks and even a week's worth of food. Our 2 year old was thrilled because he was high up and had a chat with his friend.

The bike has additional add-ons like a rain cover and a parasol that the kids and dog all appreciated when the elements got too much. Unlike other cargo bikes, where it is difficult to secure your belongings, the cargo box has a lockable storage box that easily fits a wallet, a computer and other small valuables.

At 148 pounds, it's not your normal ride. But with every trip around the block, I became more and more certain of getting him on the road.

The components are not of the highest quality. However, the combination of the Shimano Tourney SL-TX50 and the 500 W 48 V Dapu hub motor ensured smooth shifting and pedaling. And the easy-to-charge battery let us drive almost 40 kilometers through the city before we had to recharge it.

The standover design and easy-to-adjust seat fit in a variety of sizes. I'm barely 5 & # 39; 1 & # 39; & # 39; and I can drive it as well as my 6 & # 39; Stepfather. The control panel is also very intuitive and easy to turn on to show speed and battery life.

For the family who wants to replace their car for short trips on site, this bike is the perfect ride. However, it is not for people who want to get where they want to go quickly. The motor supports up to 32 km / h, but is factory set to 24 km / h (this can easily be changed via the settings).

And because it's a trike, handling the bike is a bit unstable at higher speeds, especially in corners where you can't lean like a normal bike. We therefore recommend that you keep this maximum speed of 24 km / h for a while until you know the restrictions. Think of this bike as a bike where you can take it easy and enjoy the sights. It's a super fun experience to share with your kids.

Weight: 148 lbs.
Length: 6 & # 39;
Load capacity: 220 lbs .; four children, a mix of a medium-sized dog and a child or two children and a large grocery store
Offer: 20-30 miles depending on the load and speed

Advantages: Comes fully assembled and has a secure locker; thick, durable, flat tires; Space for up to five children (with one on the back)
Disadvantage: Heavy; harder to secure and turn around than other more bike-like models; is large and can take up a lot of space in the garage
Best for: Bring several children to the local park, dogs, and large grocery shopping

With this bike, you can buy a large grocery store, transport your SUP to the local surf wave, or take your dog and child to the river for a hike. Driving is fast and smooth with a Bosch Performance CX mid-drive motor and a PowerPack 500 battery.

There are a number of gears and four levels of pedal-based electrical assistance. Like everyone else, it can only reach up to 32 km / h, but it feels like you're driving a lot faster. And at the traffic lights, it was easiest to start due to the internal hub, which allows you to change gears when stopped.

It takes some time to get used to the longer and heavier front end. But after a couple of practice runs, it felt very natural. The hard part is recalibrating your curves on your conventional bike! The control panel is the fanciest of all interfaces. In this way, the user can see how much electricity he uses, how long the trip takes, how many kilometers he has traveled so far and how many kilometers are left. The range of the Supermarché is between 20 and 40 miles. For our family, we used it three to four times a day with an average of 7 mile trips at £ 200. We discharged the battery onto a bar every day. Fortunately, it's very easy to park it in the garage and recharge it for another round. The access frame and the easy to adjust cockpit fit into the entire neighborhood of 4 & # 39; 9 & # 39; & # 39; to 6 & # 39; 5 & # 39; & # 39 ;.

$ 5,999 sounds like a pretty high price, but when we compared this to other premium-brand Longjohn motorcycles, it was actually one of the lowest prices. And if you know you will be using it every day (and save some money on gasoline), it may just be worth the cost. The Supermarché is also available in a non-electric option for $ 2,799.

Weight: 78 lbs.
Length: 8 & # 39; 5 & # 39; & # 39;

Price: $ 5,500 for sale (excluding box)
Advantages: Large capacity, fits everything from a large barrel to two children in front
Disadvantage: The passenger can feel the bumps more than on the back of the bike because it has no bumps. it is long and heavy
Best suited for: Big Costco buys and gives the children a trip to school, food or paper deliveries

How to choose a cargo bike

What family / driver are you?

Before you start searching, ask yourself what you use the bike for most. Buy food? Children's pickups and dropoffs? Deliver pizza? Bring your dog to the dog park? Drag the boards to the local surf wave? All of the above? Narrowing your search this way before looking at the options will make it less overwhelming.

What's your budget

New electric cargo bikes can range from $ 1,800 to $ 8,000. Freight boxes, panniers, front boxes, stands and child seats cost extra and can add up quickly. However, after a quick search in my local Craigslist and Facebook online market groups, I saw some pretty good options that are a lot cheaper than buying them brand new.

How long is your average commuting?

Finding out how long your longest average commute takes will give you a good idea of the range you're looking for. There are many options in terms of battery and motor power. And more and more bicycles offer the possibility to attach another battery to the frame.

How much space do you need to keep?

It is very important that you have enough space. Apart from the GSD, many take up a lot of space in your garage. Some like the Bunch Bikes have an outer cover that protects them when you keep them outside.
